Because in God they believed not [they relied not on Him, they adhered not to Him], and they trusted not in His salvation (His power to save).” (Psalm 78:22)

The Psalmist is not talking about disbelief in people that had never known or credited God (I suggest reading the entire Psalm for context anyway), this is about God's very own. This Scripture serves as a loving wake-up call to us. Having known God and even being an active church goer, we can still "not believe in God."

Proximity to church does not equal faith, nor does ministry activity. Intimacy with God, and/or deep dependency upon Christ takes intentionality and time personally. Church community can be a supporting aid, but it does not guarantee deep relationship in Christ. We can very well be present in church circles without believing deeply in God.

It's not a general belief of God we need. Most believe in some higher power anyways. But do we truly believe in God, even after coming to salvation in Christ? Do we actually believe that He is still at work in us, around us, and in the world?

When I read this Psalm, I had to check myself. I don't want to be in disbelief as a child of God, but I knew there were areas where I was definitely doing just that. And no shame about it, I'm grateful God showed me this passage to show me my own heart. Disbelief has an impact on us that is more harmful than we realize.

What about you? Are there any areas of disbelief? Take some time to reflect and allow God to show you these areas. Any correction He shows us is an act of love.

“Watch out, brothers, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God.”

(Hebrews 3:12)
