“Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word.” (Ephesians 6:17)
This month we will be looking at mental health since October is “Depression Awareness Month.” This is something we all encounter either personally or due to someone close to us, so it is important to spend some time attending to the issue along with solutions that we can find in Scripture. Depression is something I have had a personal history with and most of these tips will benefit anyone, not just those that struggle with depression.
First things first though, the beginning solution to any and all mental health issues, is salvation. Unapologetically, I will repeat this over and over, salvation offers us the mind of Christ of which we are ill-prepared to fight any battle without it. Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior isn’t just about insurance from hell and the wrath of God. It’s not just saving us from something, but also for something.
Salvation is your helmet because it protects the mind of Christ that is given to each and every believer. It doesn’t take us out of battle, but it does help protect us from every kick to the head that Satan presents. Don’t think for a second that this is some flimsy bike helmet, this bad boy protects you from some serious danger too. Helmets back in the days of which the writer of Ephesians is referring to covered all the way down to your neck and left just enough room to see out of.
So, plainly put, if you want to get a hold of any issue of depression, you need the mind of Christ which is also given along with the helmet of salvation. No, you won’t feel any different, often times with spiritual matters, it’s not about feeling anyways. However, this is of utmost importance some of the best wisdom I could ever offer anyone.
Can you still struggle with depression after salvation? Yes, of course. I certainly did. However, that discussion is for another post on another day (or you can message me personally and we can discuss). But this tidbit is the best place to begin and battle depression- put on the helmet to protect the mind of Christ given you upon salvation.
"But we thank God for giving us the victory as conquerors through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One."
(1 Corinthians 15:57)
