“Lord, when doubts fill my mind, when my heart is in turmoil, quiet me and give me renewed hope and cheer.” (Psalm 94:19)
I love that mental health has become such a common topic within church walls today. When I started going to church in the 90’s, this was not the case. In fact, there seemed to be a pre-conceived notion that being in church meant that you had your crap together on every level- mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.
Let me just tell you, some of the biggest dysfunctions in my life, my biggest failures, have occurred after I started going to church. Part of this is because of spiritual warfare, but some of it was because I was restlessly figuring things out in my walk with God. We cannot forget that church is full of broken people that are finding their way in life while they walk with God too. You can be a Christian and have deep-seeded issues at the same time. Both can exist in the same person. Afterall, that’s my testimony.
If you’ve been going to church for some time and feel like things in your life have seemingly gotten worse, take heart and chill out. It’s okay. Satan hates anything that God loves, so you and I are fair game and a target of attack most likely. There are ways to handle those things so that we can keep functioning in life. Prayer and Scripture are some of our biggest tools.
In the meantime, you take a deep breath and keep battling. Things will get better if we refuse to throw in the towel (I’m not saying you’ll never not struggle, it’s just that it does get better). Always hold onto hope with Jesus that there will be better days ahead.
“For I [fully] satisfy the weary soul, and I replenish every languishing and sorrowful person.”
(Jeremiah 31:25)
