“He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.” (Psalm 23:2)
Here, David continues with the imagery of the shepherding of God. God is leading to care for his flock to rest and replenish. Both portions of the stanza in verse two show the verbs in present-tense forms. God is actively taking care of us.
Note the still waters. There have been several times that waters were part of the history of God's people. There were times when he would part large bodies of water. He can calm stormy seas. But in this case, he knows how to lead people alongside calm waters.
Sheep, supposedly, only drink from still waters (I cannot definitely confirm this since I have zero experience in this field). They find rushing, loud, chaotic bodies of water dangerous and usually will not drink from them. They will go without water for longer periods until they find a safe place to drink from. This is a picture of how God handles us as his sheep. The Good Shepherd leads us to places of safety to refresh them and quench their thirst.
When life is chaotic, look to the Good Shepherd. He will lead you to still waters. He will give safety and replenish you with in quiet places.
“For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”
(Revelation 7:17)
