“… a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,” (Ecclesiastes 3:4)

A personal observation that I have is that the opportunity to have fun and celebrate as age progresses seems to decrease. Children do not need to find a reason to laugh, dance, or have fun, every day is the occasion, but adults…not so much. I don’t know about you, but this is not the way I want to move through my life. I want laughter to be in abundance, joy to be real, and celebration to be frequent.

Now, I’m not saying to avoid grief, there is a time to do that, and it should be done appropriately. However, it is easy to have reasons to mourn. We don’t have to look very far to need a reason to grieve in this life. Hardship and strife come way too easy. Sickness is far more contagious than peace. Stress seems far more common than joy. There is no need of effort for frustration and worry. This is the way of the of the world after the fall of Adam.

It seems to be against the grain to make space for celebration, but it is necessary. Fun is just as important for health as rest, though society does not credit it that way. There has to be a conscious effort for rejoicing because it is a choice. Make room for joy. It is just as appropriate as the other needs of life.

“When others are happy, be happy with them, and when they are sad, be sad.”

(Romans 12:15)
