“He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15)

I once heard someone say that God has no grandchildren. Meaning, you cannot ride off the coattails of a parents or grandparents relationship with God. You either have a relationship with Jesus or you don't.

When Peter responded to the question Jesus asked, he didn't just give a correct formal answer. Jesus confirmed that it wasn't knowledge taught to him by men, but it was personally revealed by God. There were no coattails, Peter answered from personal experience. which serves as a model for all of us.

Just because someone was raised around church and religion does not mean that they are a Christian. Just because you go to church and read your Bible does not mean you have a personal relationship with Jesus. Just because you live according to religious rules or what you think "a good person" is does not make you a disciple.

Strip away all the knowledge taught via sermons, religious programs, and the like, what are you left with? Do you have a relationship with God on an on-going basis? Do you truly pray and read Scripture to seek him out to hear and know him more? Knowing about God and truly knowing God through experience are two totally different things.

In a world full of information, we don't need more knowledge. We need to know Jesus. And he wants us to know him. This week, take a moment and truly spend some time with God to truly experience him.

“That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God’s devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it];”

(Ephesians 3:18)
