“When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,” (Luke 22:45)
Luke, being the doctor he was, has the only account of the Gospels that notes why they were asleep. They weren't just asleep from being tired which, Mark or Matthew may seem to depict. Luke completes the story to give psychological understanding. The disciples were exhausted from sorrow.
Sorrow is not just an emotion. No emotion is, actually. Feelings and thoughts are tied together. As a matter of fact, the heart and mind are often interchangeable throughout Scripture because they are so closely linked. Then, the body follows suit of the heart and mind. This is why Proverbs mentions as a man thinks, so he is (Proverbs 23:7).
Luke gives a great parallel in this chapter of how man can often be instead of how they should be. The sorrow the disciples felt was also what Jesus felt, but his action is the difference. Go back through and note the distress of Jesus and the disciples, but also note the reaction difference of each.
Jesus prayed. He prayed for his will. The disciples fell asleep under the weakness of their will. The flesh became too much. Not all physical ailments are physical. You are a soul with a body, not a body with a soul.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
(Psalm 73:26)
