“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” (Hebrews 13:16)
I'll probably sound like a broken record, but one of the best things I ever did for my mental health was to find a greater purpose in my life. I found ways to give back and serve others. In doing so, I met people that have it way worse than me, but have more joy. Also, I found that so many of us struggle with the same issues. These repetitive experiences helped shift my mindset over time.
The problem with some mental health treatments is that a person's entire day is focused on their issue and not much else. Everything is centralized on the problem and not solutions. What good could ever come from only thinking about the negative?
What is needed to be understood is that one of the most toxic things you can do for my mental health is to focus only on you. I'm not saying not to take time for necessary self-care. But if you're entire life and schedule revolves around your wants and goals, then you're probably out of balance. Mental health and wellness knows how to fine tune a good mix of self-care and giving back/serving others. Additionally, I truly believe God commanded us to love and serve others because he designed it for our well-being.
If you struggle with mental health, I like to gently challenge you. Take a look and see what opportunities are around you. Start looking for a greater purpose, because you were definitely made for more than just surviving.
“Don’t just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing.”
