"The word of the LORD came to me, saying…" (Jeremiah 1:4)

If you read through the Old Testament, especially in the books of the prophets, you see often that, "the word of the Lord came to…" (then fill in the blank with said prophet's name). I understand that the word of the Lord back then is different than today. The Bible as we know it was an unfolding narrative being written and still to be written. Then we also have Jesus, "the word made flesh" (John 1:14). However, I want you to set that aside for a moment to realize that the phrase, "the word of the Lord came," is still relevant for today.

So many days I make myself read Scripture, and now that's it's a discipline in my life, I thoroughly enjoy it. For the most part, I am doing just that, reading Scripture and then praying and journaling over it. I'm the one making myself come to the word of the Lord, essentially. But my favorite times though, are the times when the word of the Lord will come to me. What I mean is that it will really stand out to me on the page of the Bible or there will be a random phrase that comes to my mind and I know it is not my own intellect.

What I want to either remind you of or invite you to see, is that, God still speaks and he wants you to hear him. Many times in the beginning of your Christian journey, you'll be the one bringing yourself to the Scriptures and reading them. But then you'll start to know God through the Bible and begin to be able to hear him and the voice of the Holy Spirit will become familiar.

Don't get frustrated in bringing yourself to Scripture constantly. You may feel like it's just a chore, but I assure you it's a worthwhile investment. Hang in there, the word of the Lord will come.

"And you will need the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the Word of God." (Ephesians 6:17)
