“But Moses protested again, “What if…?” (Exodus 4:1)

Moses is not my favorite leader in Scripture. I hate that his story doesn't end with him going in the promised land. Maybe it's the writer in me that longs for a happy ending for him, but it just irks me. That's kind of neither here nor there for today's post, but now you know haha. Anywho, moving on…

In Exodus 4, Moses has been living his life privately for a long time now and we see God encounter him to call him back into leadership. What I love about this chapter is that we see some random miracles done privately as instructive examples to use for those God has asked Moses to lead as a way of convincing them. Granted, these miracles seem quite peculiar in what he did, but it's still amazing nonetheless.

It seems funny to me that Moses was completely concerned with the issues of the Israelites not believing when it was really his own unbelief of God's ability to convince the Israelites into belief that was the actual concern (where you able to follow that?). God could have just given instruction on what to do when they would question Moses, but no, God performs two miracles alone with Moses to convince Moses from his own unbelief. I love God for things like that.

If it's not enough that a burning bush got his attention, he then gets direct, step-by-step lessons given to him on conflict management. However, the biggest conflict was the one inside of Moses. As God often does, he approached him to do a task that is quite overwhelming, but dealt with him personally about the very issue he would have to confront in his calling. I truly do love the wisdom, strategy, and creativity of God.

It’s easy to get nervous at the magnitude of what God may be asking you to do, but take comfort in knowing that he’s already prepared for that. Don’t get consumed in all the “what if’s.” He knows already. He also goes before you.

“The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

(Deuteronomy 31:8)
