“…and all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
On average, a person thinks over 5,000 thoughts a day. Don't ask me how they were able to measure that, but that's what "they" say. Even if it's inaccurate, it still drives home a solid point- we think constantly.
The mind never shuts down. Even while sleeping, your mind is constantly working. So, in a rolling 24 hour period, I can only imagine how many thoughts can go through our heads.
With that in mind (no pun intended), I'd like to suggest that our thinking is the greatest area of opportunity to improve our love and obedience to God. I mean, think of all the things you encounter throughout your day that triggers a thought. From preparing, interacting, speaking, consuming, critiquing, operating, organizing, responding…that's a lot. And we didn't even get to the less functional parts of our day.
For me, this has been a large part of my focus as of late. But I know that I need God to obey and love God better, so I've been asking for help with that. I'm not good at it yet and honestly, it’s really hard. I don't know what loving God with all my mind looks like in its entirety or when done very well, but improvement has to start somewhere right?
This week, in all our thousands of opportunities, may we increase ways to love God with our minds better.
For, “Who can know the Lord’s though thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.”
(1 Corinthians 2:16)
