“Let all that I am wait quietly before God…” (Psalm 62:5)
Currently, I'm battling a check engine light in my car. I've fixed the same issue several times and it still manages to come on every now and again. It just irks me every time and though I'm looking to buy a new car, the market isn't the best for that right now. Anywho…that's besides my point.
Over the years, I've had some real gems for automobiles- my favorite being a Jeep. While I'm certainly no mechanic, I've also learned quite a few things from the mistakes I've made as an owner and what I've also had to fix from the wear and tear of owning vehicles. But I'll never forget what my dad told me when I started driving. He gave me two instructions: always change your oil because it's the life of your vehicle and don't forget to turn your radio down every now and again to make sure everything sounds like it's running well.
I do pretty good at changing the oil. That's not something I get off-track with often. I don't always remember to turn down the radio to listen to my car to see if it's operating like it should though. Herein lies my point- this isn't just a good tip about vehicle maintenance, but heart maintenance.
I can't tell you how many seasons of my life (especially when I was younger) that I would just run around without every slowing down or quieting myself to take a listen and let God speak about my heart. I hardly ever turned down the noise of my life to lean in and listen to make sure I was functioning like I should (I can tell you I certainly wasn't functioning like I should).
It's so easy to busy yourself, even in the namesake of God, but I can guarantee that never quieting ourselves and getting still costs us. Something that can be routine maintenance with little cost will end up being a major malfunction in us if we don't stop and listen. This can be our health, emotions, thought life, or even finances. God speaks and it's often for our own benefit, but we have to be responsible for our part.
So maybe slow down this week. Intentionally cut out some noise and take a listen to see what God has to say. He is always speaking, but we need to listen.
“For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling,”
(Isaiah 30:15)
