"Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them." (Matt 4:21)

James, John, & Zebedee were fisherman, not as a hobby, but by trade. So when Scripture says they were mending their nets, it was part of the job. They were doing the normal, everyday, possibly mundane tasks and upkeep of being fisherman. However, it was in the middle of faithfully doing the mundane that they were called. Be ready in and out of season.

There are times where you will go through the motions for months on end, repeating the same actions. Everything will be routine, even boring. And sometimes, you may even question why you're doing what you're doing. Keep going.

Some people chase emotional highs throughout their life and avoid boredom like the plague. They hop from relationship to relationship, adrenaline rush to adrenaline rush, or for the spiritual folks- from one church movement to the next. Nothing holds their attention for too long, because they avoid the very things that stewardship, faithfulness, and discipline require to bring about the very fruit they desire in their lives (of which I speak from experience).

Moses did this by tending flock for a season. David shepherded for years also. Even Paul did tentmaking for a time.

Embrace the boring. There's always a purpose. God never wastes a season, no matter how pointless or boring it may seem. Don't lose enthusiasm amidst the monotony.

Mend your nets. Stay faithful. You never know when Jesus will call you and shift you in another direction.

"Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching."

(2 Tim 4:2)
