“Drink water from your own cistern [of a pure marriage relationship] and fresh running water from your own well.” (Proverbs 5:15, AMP)

There’s a lie that has become a well-known saying amongst today’s culture, “The grass is always greener on the other side.” It implies that what our neighbors have is always better than what we have (or whomever we may see on social media). To be frank, it’s called coveting something God is against and for reasons that are for our protection.

Coveting, while inward, is dangerous. It is the step that precedes stealing. Or in the case of marriage, adultery. All three of these mentioned (coveting, stealing, adultery) are in the original Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17).

While adultery and stealing are actions, coveting is an attitude of strong desires. It’s a state of heart and in the case of Proverbs, it’s referenced a lot in the negative, sinful matter.

To prevent the consequences of committing these sins, we must address the issues of the heart. Happiness is an inside job between you and God. Nothing or no one will make you happy if you’re not already happy. Until that truth is owned, we will wrestle with coveting.

Here’s another truth: We all wrestle with these issues. No person is exempt from the temptations of the devil. For those that have fallen prey to the deception and tricks of the enemy in coveting (or perhaps stealing or adultery), rest assured that God can do what seems impossible and restore our worst mistakes.

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

(1 John 1:9, NLT)
