“Don’t look to men for help; their greatest leaders fail…” (Psalm 146:3)

I must admit, it rattles me a little when I see a Christian claim to stop believing in God because of issues in the church. Sometimes people even dispute the existence of God when seeing issues posted in the media or watching Christian's exchange online in ways that are not Christ-like. It makes me wonder if people don't truly know what church actually is or if they need reminded because they've forgotten (I know I have at times).

When issues are heard about or commented on and it's church folks, don't be disappointed or surprised. Yes, it may be a divine institution and the Bride of Christ, but it is also full of flawed, sinful people doing exactly what flawed, sinful people do. This isn't excusing terrible behavior from people, but I'm trying to emphasize that hope should never be in the Church because church cannot and does not save you. Only faith in Jesus does.

I've been going to church for about 25 years now and I've seen and been a part of some heartbreaking things. I'm not just talking about disputes over money and budgets. I'm talking about newsworthy scandals, betrayals, and everything in between. I've watched some ugly things and have even been a part of the ugly myself, unfortunately. I've lost many wonderful people and had to forgive them, but also needed to be forgiven as well. But, do you know what else I’ve seen? Miracles. I’ve met some of the best people that have changed my life for the good. Some of the people in church have helped teach me the most about God too. I have friends from all over the world because of church. There’s beauty from the ashes.

What people have to understand is that the church is not a social club for people who have their crap together. Church is for people who are messed and know it. People should go to church not because they think that's what good people do, but because they know they need God and community, regardless of how well they look put together. There has never been a perfect church and there never will be, and that includes the leaders.

If you stopped going to church because of some junk in the past, give it another shot. I cannot promise you that you won’t get hurt, because you probably will. Still, bring your imperfections and flaws along with everyone else's. From the beginning God has used imperfect people and He will continue to do so.

“Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.”

(Hebrews 10:25)
