Momentum For April 1st 2024
“He causes me to lie down in pastures of green grass; he guides me beside quiet waters.” (Psalm 23:2)
The misunderstanding of busy-ness seems to be that the more a person is busy that it indicates their importance, or they do important things. While that can seem true, it isn't always the case. The truth is that we can create a life that is constantly busy because we are trying to distract ourselves from what lies underneath it all.
Years ago I had a shoulder injury that required an MRI. They wanted me to lay still to get the imaging needed, but I just couldn't do it because of the pain caused by the position my shoulder was in. Any time I reclined to lay down, I had to move immediately to avoid the discomfort.
This is the same for the busy soul. Restlessness can be caused by deep trauma or pain that never healed. Being still seems impossible and avoided at all costs.
I remember reading a book by Dallas Willard years ago and he said that, "Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day." At that point I resolved to reduce as much rush and chaos from my life as possible. It's made a great impact for me.
Leaving zero room for margin in your life is dangerous. The "no days off" grind mentality is simply not healthy. That type of living will cost you eventually.
Stillness isn't scary. Embrace the discomfort so that you can find freedom on the level you need. The safest person to go there with you is the Holy Spirit. You will be helped every step of the way.
”Come to me and I will give you rest—all of you who work so hard beneath a heavy yoke.”
(Matthew 11:28)
