“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.” (Psalm 23:5)

This week, we shift in the Psalm. David doesn't back pedal on God as Shepherd, but he adds another idea, which, at first, may seem strange. However, this continues David's same proclamation that is seen in the beginning of his psalm, which is trusting God.

The idea in verses five and six references God as a gracious host of a celebratory banquet. In fact, the word table for verse five can be synonymous with feast. In addition to that, hosts often anointed the head with oil as a gesture of welcome.

For American's or others outside of the culture of that time in ancient Near East, hospitality went beyond merely providing a meal. But even more, hosts were responsible for safety. So, David is describing God as more than just a good host for a great meal. Think through what David is describing. To be at a feast in the presence of your enemies tells you that the steadfast love of God is protecting you. It's not on you, but him.

If you're under a season of attack or constant opposition, remember that God's care is over you. Deep fellowship and communion with God will be necessary to sustain you in this season. Rest assured though, there is no safer place to be.

“The Lord himself is my inheritance, my prize. He is my food and drink, my highest joy! He guards all that is mine.”

(Psalm 16:5)
