“Lord, don’t you care…” (Luke 10:38-42
Ya know, there's nothing wrong with doing chores. Look at the Proverbs 31 description of a responsible, productive woman. There's also nothing wrong with being hospitable. Scripture even tells us to offer hospitality (look at 1 Peter 4:9-10). The problem here is focus.
Martha wasn't doing anything wrong. Her actions were not sin. However, it was her attitude that made all the difference. Perhaps, she was maybe a little jealous even? Mary was doing nothing but sitting at the feet of Jesus. Yet Jesus says that Mary chose the better thing.
Could it be quite possible that because Martha was doing a commendable thing, like working and serving, that she though should have garnered more attention and praise from Jesus? Instead, she got nothing and finally got to a point where she confronted Jesus to ask if he even cared for her.
Martha opened her home to Jesus and the disciples which is a wonderful service to do. However, at some point, her act of service became about her and it made her more and more distressed. The problem is not so much what we do, but the mindset and focus of how we do it. Go sit or go serve, but whatever you do, don't be distracted by many things. When our humble acts of service start to become about us and our concerns, we've lost the joy and reward of service. Focusing on ourselves will always leave us upset. Mary knew the care of Jesus because that's who she kept her focus on.
“So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.”
(Galatians 6:9)
