“Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
In general, there’s not really any good meaning or symbolism behind dirt when studying Scripture. Dirt in and of itself isn’t a great thing to begin with. I mean, it’s dirt. It’s equated with filth and often gets everywhere.
What can be noted is how God can take a million particles of something such as dirt and make something. He can take something so scattered and fragmented, with no form, and shape it into something with purpose. Think about that.
What you can also find is God using dirt. He took some and made man. I mean, I have no idea how many particles of dust it took to make man, but I have trouble with jigsaw puzzles, let alone trying to comprehend this.
He made beauty from dirty ashes (Isaiah 61:3). Even Jesus used mud to heal (John 9:6-7). God knows how to take the filthy and unclean and use it. It’s not an Old Testament thing or a New Testament thing, this is common with God.
Maybe you feel like dirt. Or even dirty. By that, I mean maybe you feel unworthy, ashamed, or without purpose. Don’t doubt what God can do about that. He’s been doing the impossible and making miracles out of broken or fragmented situations since Creation. He won’t stop now.
“Yet LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we all are the work of Your hands.”
(Isaiah 64:8)
