“Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.” (Psalm 119:33-34)
When I was a new Christian, I had a Sunday school teacher and a youth pastor that continually told me to read God's word. I didn't have a problem with their advice for the most part but for the fact that I didn't understand a thing I was reading. How could they love Scripture and get so much out of it?
I wasn't shy with my questions at that point in my life and I'm still not I suppose, so I voiced the issue, why am I reading something I don't understand? What's the point? I'll never forget the answer given to me and I still live by it to this day.
My youth pastor explained that understanding will come eventually. Give it time. He explained that just because my mind didn't comprehend what was happening, my spirit did.
Twenty-five years later, I still rely on that advice. When I read a portion of Scripture that I don't get, I pray about it and ask for help understanding. When I don't feel like reading, I do it anyways knowing the discipline is beneficial beyond my comprehension.
Get into the Word of God. Keep at it. Wrestle with it. Pray over it. You won't regret it.
“Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me.”
(Psalm 119:97-98)
