“…and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.” (Ephesians 6:15)

In World War 1, soldiers would find themselves in the trenches for weeks at a time. The trenches were not comfortable for survival, but necessary in war. They were often full of water and dirty with soldiers struggling to stay dry. With these conditions, many suffered from a condition called "trench foot."

Trench foot was caused by a soldiers feet being wet for long periods of time. Because the trenches were dirty and often in terrible condition, infection would occur from the break down of the skin on the foot after the long exposure to dampness. Trench foot was a serious threat that left some soldiers unable to fight and even to a point where they lost toes and/or their whole foot.

Don't think for a second that the feet aren't important when it comes to battle. To battle, you have to be able to stand. Shoes matter for stability and safety.

What gives us that readiness is what Scripture calls the "Gospel of Peace." The Gospel will cover you to help stand and prepare for battle. As a soldier so to speak, you're more than ready to move forward. It is not our own power, but instead the power of the Gospel that should be relied upon.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation [from His wrath and punishment] to everyone who believes [in Christ as Savior], to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

(Romans 1:16)
