“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.” (1 Peter 5:7)
By far, the biggest and most valuable lesson that I have learned over the decades in my life with God, is that of my mind. It took me a long time to figure out, but God really cares about our mental health. The Bible has a lot to say about the topic actually. Topics like salvation (which covers your mind), double-mindedness (which sounds negative, but is fascinating to understand), pride (an issue of high-mindedness), humility (to be lowly of mind), strongholds (which are relative to thought cycles), anxiety (a dividing of the mind), reasonings (how we process things in our minds), perceptions (the way we see in our minds), imaginations (how we use creativity in our minds), and probably much more I’m forgetting to mention or may not be aware of yet.
Realizing how much the Bible speaks about our minds is important for two reasons:
1. If the Bible was written with so much information on the topic, then God foreknew an issue and gave us direction on how to handle it.
2. We can’t neglect Scripture when considering our quest for mental and emotional wellness.
The battle for mental health is so dangerous because it’s one we cannot see. Disorders, anxieties, and diseases are an inside issue. God knowing this, gave us the Holy Spirit to also do an inside job. He gave us the Scripture to also help instruct and fortify mental and emotional wellness as well.
Since realizing how much is in Scripture relating to the mind, it has been a mission of mine to get people to understand that too. Hear it clearly, God cares so much about YOU, not just the world. The stress that impacts you, people that break your heart, the losses that have almost paralyzed you, the depression that has almost taken your life…HE CARES. And He has cared so much that He has given you weapons to fight for your life.
In fact, learning about biblical mental health has impacted my life so much that I wrote a 31-devotional about it. I’m excited to announce that early next year, it will be published. Details about how to purchase a copy will be coming in the future so stay tuned. Please pray for this project because I am hoping this becomes a valuable and practical resource, including that of Christian mental health professionals. Stay tuned!
