"…Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled." Matt 26:55
In the narrative of the life of Jesus, Judas is popularly known as the betrayer. Peter is known for denying Jesus three times. The reality is though, every single on of those disciples ditched Jesus in his worst hour.
The betrayal was awful enough. Peter's denial on top of that was more salt in the wound. But to be ditched by all of the disciples? Ouch. If you've ever been ditched by a friend, then you can mildly relate to Jesus in that moment.
They didn't just skip out on him though. To leave someone is one thing, but Scripture says they "forsook" him. To forsake someone doesn't just mean to leave, it goes further and deeper. Forsaking entails leaving someone to handle a problem all by themselves.
Granted, there was nothing the disciples could do. They couldn't rescue Jesus from the inevitable. It was Jesus alone, the son of God, that had to endure the Cross. However, that doesn't negate the mental, emotional, and spiritual pain he was feeling in those moments.
Many times in Scripture, we are promised that God will never leave us nor forsake us. We're not alone and we don't have to face any issue alone either. Christ understands our sufferings. He knows our pain. So wherever you find yourself, lean into the fellowship of the Holy Spirit to help you through it all.
“After you have suffered a little while, our God, who is full of kindness through Christ, will give you his eternal glory. He personally will come and pick you up, and set you firmly in place, and make you stronger than ever.”
(1 Peter 5:10)
